BATON ROUGE — If you open the Louisiana Secretary of State’s GeauxVote app, you may notice what appears to be an election scheduled for January 11.
Screengrabs from the app have been circulating in various Facebook groups, sparking discussions among voters. Many questioned what would be on the ballot, while others wondered why an election would be held just a month after the December runoff.
UWK checked with the Secretary of State’s office, which clarified that the January 11 date in the app was originally reserved for a potential runoff in a local election in Washington Parish. However, since the candidate won outright in the primary election, the January 11 runoff is no longer needed.
Joel Watson Jr., Deputy Secretary of State for Communications, confirmed that there is no election on January 11 for anyone in the state.
The next scheduled election is a special primary on February 15, 2025, in East Baton Rouge and Lafayette parishes. This election will allow voters in Louisiana State Senate District 14 to choose a replacement for Cleo Fields, who was elected to Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District seat in November.
Senate District 14, a predominantly Democratic district, includes areas of both north and south Baton Rouge, spanning from near Southern University to south of LSU.
Key dates for the special election are as follows:
- Qualifying period: January 7–9
- Voter registration deadline: January 25
- Early voting: February 1–8
If a runoff is necessary, it will coincide with Louisiana’s municipal primary election on March 29, 2025.
