Corrections officer terminated after jail fight video leaked to social media

An Ascension Parish Jail corrections officer was terminated for violating policy after he allegedly recorded a fight at the jail on his cell phone and sent it to non-authorized personnel.

According to Ascension Sheriff Bobby Webre, corrections officer Matthew Hall was fired for his role in spreading the fight footage. He worked at the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office for nine months.

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies were investigating how video footage of a fight on August 27th inside the parish jail was uploaded to an inmate’s social media account.

Ascension Sheriff Bobby Webre was informed of the video two days later after it started circulating on Instagram.

No inmates or officers were hurt in the fight.

“We did a complete search of the inmate’s cell and entire jail and we did not find a cell phone so we’re still trying to figure out how it got on an inmate’s Instagram unless someone has his login and password,” Webre said. “We believe one of our correction officers recorded it on his cell phone after watching the replay on a surveillance camera. Afterwards, he sent it to his friends and relatives, so that’s how it got out.”

Webre said an investigation into the breach of security protocol is ongoing.

The investigation remains underway and discipline for the deputy will be based on the outcome of the internal investigation.
