Couple healing from July motorcycle crash needs help with medical expenses | Man starting treatment for new infection

LIVINGSTON PARISH — It’s now been two months since a crash on a motorcycle severely injured a young couple, Hunter Hue and his fiancée Madison Shaw. Their community recently held a benefit fundraiser event to help with their mounting medical expenses and raise their spirits.

On July 14, the couple was heading toward Ponchatoula from the Holden area when the crash happened on Highway 22. Another vehicle coming from the opposite direction made a left-hand turn in front of the motorcycle they were on, leading to the crash, said Rebecca Grdinich, Hue’s mother.

Hue was rushed into a 12-hour surgery, but ultimately ended up losing both of his legs from the crash. Shaw was taken immediately to New Orleans for her severe road rash and burns.

Since that time, Shaw spent around two weeks at the trauma center for her wounds before she was able to go home. However, she has had to travel to and from New Orleans regularly for wound care, Grdinich said.

Hue has been having regular in-home physical therapy to help him adjust to moving in a wheelchair and prosthetics. His mother told UWK that he’s been in a lot of pain as he adjusts to everything.

He went through surgery on his leg this past Sunday, and the doctors gave the family good news. The surgeons saw no signs of infection at that time and were able to close up his wound.

However, the surgery has left him in intense pain, so they’ve been working to get the pain under control, she added. Then on Wednesday, they got news that Hue’s infection did come back in two different areas, which means he’ll be undergoing six weeks of IV antibiotics.

Because of the IV treatment, doctors do not believe it’s safe for Hue to travel far, meaning he will not be able to attend the bilateral above knee amputee camp that is happening next week in Oklahoma. The camp, hosted by Dream Team Prosthetics, provides educational opportunities for those with bilateral above knee limb loss to learn independent mobility.

How to help Hunter & Madison

Family, friends and the local community joined together on Saturday, Sept. 26 for a benefit fundraiser to help with the family’s medical bills. The event featured music, food, silent auction and raffles, and fun for the kids present.

Hue’s mother said that while his insurance will pay a portion of his prosthetics, there will still be a large portion that is coming out of pocket.

To help with ongoing medical bills and other expenses, the family has a GoFundMe, as well. They said they’re appreciative of everyone who has contributed to help and prayed for the couple and their children, as well.

Elite Designs in Ponchatoula is selling t-shirts and hoodies online and in person at their shop to help with expenses. T-shirts are $20 and hoodies are $30.
