BATON ROUGE — An early morning crash on July 18 left one person dead, according to State Police.
It was around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, when State Police Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Scenic Highway (Hwy. 61), south of LA 964. The crash left 41-year-old Kelly Downey of Jarreau dead.
According to LSP, Downey was driving a 2003 Honda Accord north on Scenic Highway when, for reasons under investigation, the car went off the road to the left. The car traveled into the median, hit a concrete embankment and caught fire, officials said.
Downey was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the extent of the damage in the car, investigators couldn’t determine whether Downey was wearing a seatbelt. Impairment is unknown; however, as part of the investigation, a routine toxicology sample was obtained. This crash remains under investigation.
