Deadline approaching to claim state tax refunds

The deadline is approaching for Louisiana taxpayers to claim millions of dollars in state income tax refunds before the state department of revenue transfers them to Louisiana’s unclaimed property fund.

The taxpayers have until Oct. 6 to claim the money.

In August, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) sent notice of unclaimed property letters to 20,400 individual and business taxpayers.

As of Oct. 5, 4,000 have responded to claim their refunds, according to he LDR. The remaining $9.5 million will be transferred by law to the unclaimed property division later in October if the funds aren’t claimed by Oct. 6.

If you’ve gotten a letter and haven’t responded, complete the voucher attached to the letter and return it to the LDR. The department will issue checks through the mail for all taxpayers who submit the vouchers by the deadline.

Any refund not claimed by the deadline can still be retrieved from the unclaimed property division.
