ST. GABRIEL — Iberville Parish deputies arrested a delivery driver who is accused of bringing a handgun onto the grounds of Elayn Hunt Correctional Center on Wednesday.
Steven Tellery, 55, was booked into the Iberville Parish Prison with introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. He was released on bond less than two hours after being booked, records show.
The discovery came during a vehicle search at Hunt, a news release said. The loaded 9mm handgun was in a holster wrapped in a raincoat inside the delivery vehicle. It’s why Warden Travis Day praised the correctional officers for doing “a great job” of finding the gun.
The prison did not have to be put on lockdown because officers found the gun while the driver was in the sally port area at the prison. The gun did not make it into a prison building, Day said.
The Department of Correction prohibits visitors – including delivery drivers, vendors, contractors, volunteers and others – from bringing firearms, cell phones, drugs, tobacco, alcohol or pornography into the prison. The rule covers anything that could compromise the prison’s security, such as hazardous chemicals, flammable items or tools that could be used in an escape attempt. The same rules apply to family members and friends visiting inmates, the release said.
People caught bringing in prohibited items can be arrested and the inmates receiving them also could get disciplinary action, loss of visitation privileges or longer sentences, the news release said.
