The annual DEMCO essay contest for high school juniors has started.
Students from the seven parishes DEMCO serves are eligible for the essay contest: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and West Feliciana. Four winners will be chosen for an all-expense-paid trip to D.C to be DEMCO delegates at the NRECA Rural Electric Youth Tour from June 16 through 23 of next year.
The essay is a letter to a political leader about a concern or a matter of importance to the student.
The “letter” must be no longer than 750 words and be submitted online by Jan. 20 2023 at this link.
12 applicants will then be selected as semi-finalists and continue to the next phase of the competition.
The semi-finalists will have to give an oral presentation of their essay at the DEMCO Essay Presentation and Awards Banquet in March, and they will be tested on rural electrification knowledge.
Vice President of Communication and Governmental Affairs, David Latona said, “DEMCO delegates attend Youth Tour to learn about electric cooperatives, American history, and U.S. government. The trip is fun but also very educational. A highlight of the trip is when our delegation meets with their representatives in the House and Senate.”
Although only four students will be chosen for the NRECA Youth Tour trip, various other prizes will be given for “best-written essays.”
Immediate family members of DEMCO employees cannot apply, including grandchildren.

All essays submitted in the contest will be considered property of DEMCO and will not be returned.
