DENHAM SPRINGS —- An investigation is now underway into how a fire started at a home in Denham Springs that led to a woman’s death. The victim has now been identified.
It was around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, June 7 when the fire broke out and spread rapidly. The fire was at a home on Conrad Street in the Acadiana Place neighborhood in Denham Springs. That’s off Hwy. 16, north of Arnold Rd. and across from Amite Church Rd.
Inside the home was a 74-year-old woman, who the coroner’s office says died in the fire. The coroner’s office has identified the woman as Rita Reulet.
A 77-year-old man was able to get out of the house unharmed, according to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Anytime there is a death from a fire, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office takes over the investigation.
Initial findings from the State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators suggest that the house fire began in the attached garage, however, the exact cause has not yet been determined. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the fire was caused by an electrical event.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office noted that the Denham Springs home was equipped with working smoke alarms, which helped save the man’s life.
