Denham Springs: Two women arrested after children left in running car that ended up stolen

DENHAM SPRINGS — A mother was arrested after officials say she left her two children in a running car in Denham Springs that ended up stolen, with both kids still in the vehicle. Another woman, accused of stealing the car with the children inside, has also been arrested.

The mother, Jameka Fields, 31, of Denham Springs, called Denham Springs Police just before midnight on Aug. 26, 2024 to the Circle K on South Range Ave. near Bass Pro Blvd. DSPD says Fields told officers she had left her six and four-year-old children in a running vehicle, while she went into a store.

While she was in the store though, her vehicle was stolen with the children still inside. The vehicle was last seen leaving the area south bound on South Range Ave, towards Vincent Rd.

Denham Springs Police officers and Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies did find the stolen vehicle on Plantation Avenue. Officials say Jennifer Gullick, 40, of Thibodeaux, allegedly stole the car before crashing it into a ditch. Thankfully, the children were still inside the vehicle and were not injured.

Nearby surveillance cameras helped officers verify that Gullick had been staying in a local hotel and that’s why she was in the Denham Springs area.

Jennifer Gullick was arrested in connection to the stolen car in Denham Springs. She’s charged with theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated kidnapping. She has been booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center.

The mother of the children, Jameka Fields, was also arrested and charged with two counts of child desertion and released from the scene with a misdemeanor summons.

  1. So now you can’t leave your kids in a running car for a few minutes while you run into the store? If my wife or I ever got arrested for that I guarantee that I would go scorched-earth on the the city and take them for everything they have. How dare they add such insult to injury?
