EAST BATON ROUGE — The 25-year-old grandson accused of shooting and killing his own grandfather remains behind bars, awaiting a determination on whether bond will be set. He’s accused of killing his grandfather, a retired Baker Police officer. Typically, a bond is not set for first-degree murder charges, but in rare cases, a judge can hold a hearing a set a bond.
Nicholas Smith, 25, is accused of grabbing a gun after he and his grandfather, Danny Beck, 79, got into an argument over dinner. He’s accused of unloading the gun on his grandfather and then calling 911 “admitting to killing his grandfather,” according to the arrest warrant.
The shooting happened just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6th at a home at 15212 Crystal Dr. That’s off of Denham Rd. between Joor Rd. & Greenwell Springs Rd. in Central.
Smith started living with his grandfather in July 2025 at the home on Crystal Dr., according to records. The two got into a verbal argument over dinner and it spilled into a bedroom, at which time Smith is accused of grabbing a gun and shooting his grandfather multiple times, upwards of nine times. He died at the scene.
Smith called 911, admitted to the shooting and remained on the scene.
Beck retired from the Baker Police Department in 2009 after working 33 years in law enforcement.
Beck’s family and friends are invited to attend the visitation that will take place at Baker Funeral Home (6401 Groom Road, Baker) on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. until a memorial service at 2 p.m. Beck will be buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Pineville.
Smith is behind bars and charged with first-degree murder and illegal use of weapons.
