UPDATE: Deputy hit by car during traffic stop, fires at suspect, LSP says

ETHEL, La. — Louisiana State Police is now leading the investigation into a deputy-involved shooting in East Feliciana Parish Saturday night.

Investigators say the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s deputy was hit by a car during a traffic stop and fired at the driver. The incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Payne Rd. off of Line Rd. in Ethel.

Investigators say the deputy pulled over the driver of a Honda Accord. During that stop, the vehicle struck the deputy. The deputy then fired his service weapon, striking the driver, LSP investigators say.

Both the deputy and the driver were taken to the hospital. Their injuries are said to be minor to moderate. It’s unclear if they are still in the hospital or have been released.

Names of the deputy and the suspect have not yet been released. Louisiana State Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing.

It is standard protocol for Louisiana State Police to lead shooting investigations involving deputies and police officers.
