BAYOU MANCHAC — The Department of Environmental Quality confirmed a spill in the Port of Manchac Thursday evening.

According to DEQ, one barrel of synthetic drilling mud at Air Products spilled in the Port of Manchac. Officials say an environmental cleanup contractor was on site, and the spill was contained.

LDEQ is investigating the spill.

Air Products has been at the center of attention in Livingston and surrounding parishes for over a year. The chemical giant has plans for a $4.5 billion hydrogen manufacturing complex in Ascension Parish that would use carbon capture technology to capture emissions and inject 5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year about a mile below the lakebed.

The Air Products hub is expected to be on the south end of Livingston Parish underneath Lake Maurepas. It is one of three areas the company looks to store CO2 involving the hydrogen energy complex in Ascension Parish.

According to officials with Air Products, CO2 from the plant would be injected in wells across Livingston, St. James, St. John the Baptist, and Tangipahoa parishes a mile underneath state land. Air Products planned to have the plant operational by 2026, but the carbon capture project has met resistance.

Those who live close to the lake or use it recreationally don’t want the project and see it as harmful to the area’s iconic waterways and animal life. After conducting controversial seismic testing earlier this year, the company brought drilling rigs and other equipment into Lake Maurepas for test wells.
