Donaldsonville displays elite sportsmanship in upset victory against French Settlement

DONALDSONVILLE– Friday night, No. 8 Donaldsonville upset top seeded French Settlement in the Division III non-select quarterfinals. That was one of the things the team was getting recognized for.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the semifinals to play Red River in Lake Charles Tuesday. Since Friday’s win, a photo circulated social media about Donaldsonville’s sportmanship in a winning effort.

One video showed several Donaldsonville players consoling a French Settlment player after the game.

“It was exciting. They had faith from the beginning,” said Brittany Harvey, senior Ja’Kai Allen’s mother.

The photo showed Allen and Raiyen Oatis hugging French Settlement guard Maxwell Allison. Harvey said her son and Allison were AAU teammates last summer.

French Settlement Head Coach Jake Bourgeois said on social media after the game that he commended Donaldsonville’s sportsmanship.

“I’m the coach at French Settlement, and that was the true definition of sportsmanship and just being great kids,” Bourgeois wrote. “They could’ve ran around and celebrated but chose to show grace and comfort even through excitement. You should be proud. I know I’ll forever be a better coach because of that moment. Much respect from me, and I hope y’all go win it all!”

Oatis’ mother, Shirell Honora, credited head coach Gilbert Lionel and his staff for having the team ready to play and teaching the boys it is bigger than basketball.

“With the coaches and the kids, it’s bigger than basketball,” Oatis-Honora said. “It’s like a family. They make sure that they’re helping each other, whether it’s at school or at home. It’s a big family. When they get on the court, they work together. That’s the biggest thing. Donaldsonville has a lot of character, and we have a lot of bright futures in that city.”

Donaldsonville tipped off against Red River at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
