BATON ROUGE — As part of its master plan for Interstate 12, DOTD is conducting a survey to help pinpoint problem sections of the roadway and learn more about what changes are important to drivers.
The survey asks users to identify on maps the location of up to three trouble spots and also has them rank potential improvements.
I-12 was built as a “strategic bypass to I-10” in an effort to reduce traffic in New Orleans, a DOTD fact sheet said.
Its 85 miles intersect I-10, I-55, I-59 and U.S. Hwy. 190, and nearly a third of its traffic is trucks. Those trucks move 83 million tons of freight a year with a value of $149 billion.
DOTD said truck parking is one of its key considerations because the highway doesn’t have enough of it, and it is particularly needed between midnight and 3 a.m.
Traffic congestion and safety are the other key considerations. More than 2,500 crashes, with more than 800 injuries, occur on the I-12 corridor each year.
In the survey, users are asked to rank the importance of potential improvements, including adding lanes, increasing technology for real-time traffic information or creating high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

The master plan will guide how DOTD prioritizes improvements on the highway, which includes 117 bridges and 26 interchanges. More information about the project is available at the web site.
