A portion of Florida Blvd. in Walker remains closed at this hour after Tellus Self Storage caught on fire around 11:30am Wednesday, Aug. 18th, 2021. It was almost 3pm when the fire was finally under the control, but firefighters continue to battle hot spots.
District 4 Fire Chief James Wascom said dozens of firefighters and multiple fire departments had to fight the blaze at the storage unit, located at 9775 Florida Blvd.
Chief Wascom said the storage unit is a metal building and they were able to contain the fire to one side of the building. That however, still means nearly 20-30 units were damaged.
Thankfully, there are no reported injuries.
The agencies who assisted in this fire include Fire Districts 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, City of Denham Springs Fire Dept., City of Walker, Acadian Ambulance, the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office and the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office’s command center.
“I cannot thank all the personnel and agencies enough for coming to our aid today. This is the true meaning of helping each other. So many firefighters came in from everywhere. We had anywhere between 30-40 firefighters on scene assisting us. Thank you,” said Chief Wascom.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
