GONZALES — Mardi Gras magic is rolling back into Azalea Estates Retirement Home as the community prepares for its annual drive-through Mardi Gras parade, bringing beads, music, and smiles straight to residents who can’t make it out to traditional parades.
The celebration takes place Saturday, February 14th at 2:00 p.m. at 2305 S. Purpera Avenue in Gonzales. Residents will gather outside to watch as friends, families, and community members become the parade, driving through the property, waving, and tossing beads and other soft throws to the crowd.

The lineup kicks off early, with participants asked to begin staging in the subdivision across from Azalea Estates at 1:30 p.m. Any vehicle is welcome, and parade-goers are encouraged to play their favorite Mardi Gras music as they roll through.
Azalea Estates employee Aaron Moses says the event continues to grow each year as more people learn what it means to the residents.
“What we’re doing is inviting the community to come out, drive through, pass out throws, and really just give a friendly face to the residents we have,” Moses said.
Approximately 30 to 40 residents are expected to attend this year’s celebration, many of whom look forward to Mardi Gras all season long.
“It’s a really family-oriented environment,” Moses shared. “Our residents aren’t necessarily ailing — they’re just elderly. This gives them a chance to still experience Mardi Gras in a meaningful way.”
Because many residents are seniors, organizers ask participants to be selective and strategic with throws, sticking to soft items such as beads, plush toys, and light treats. Drivers are also encouraged to stop, wave, and take photos when possible, helping make the day extra special.
“I think once people realize this is for elderly residents who can’t go out and enjoy the parades, they really want to be part of it,” Moses said.
Organized by Lindsey Millet, the home’s activity director, the drive-through parade has become a beloved tradition, one that proves Mardi Gras isn’t about how far you travel, but about how much joy you bring.
With engines revving, music playing, and purple, green, and gold filling the air, Azalea Estates is ready to let the good times roll, one car at a time.
