TICKFAW — A 26-year-old man was hit by a car and killed on Interstate 55 Saturday night, after he was involved in a crash and got out of his vehicle to cross the interstate, State Police said.
The first wreck happened about 11 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 55 just south of La. Hwy. 442 in Tangipahoa Parish. Austin Gentry, of Independence, was one of the drivers involved in the that wreck, which happened in the southbound lanes of the interstate.
Before first-responders got to the scene of the crash, Gentry tried to cross the northbound lanes of Interstate 55. State Police said he was wearing dark-colored clothing and was in an unlit section of the interstate.
Gentry was hit by a Toyota Corolla headed north on the interstate. He died at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota was not injured and was not impaired, police said.
Police said anyone who is walking near a roadway should stay out of traffic lanes and should face oncoming vehicles. Pedestrians should also wear reflective materials in the dark. Drivers who see disabled or wrecked vehicles at the roadside should be alert for people who may have gotten out of vehicles.
