PONCHATOULA– State police are investigating a crash that killed a 47-year-old man Thursday morning.
Officials say the two-vehicle crash killed Dustin Thompson of Madisonville. State police say the initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Thompson was westbound on LA Hwy 22 in a Nissan Altima. At the same time, a Jeep Grand Cherokee was eastbound on LA Hwy 22.
According to authorities, Thompson traveled onto the westbound shoulder and hit a bridge guardrail. After hitting the guardrail, Thompson got back on the roadway before crossing the centerline and into the opposing lane, hitting the Jeep head-on.
Thompson was wearing a seatbelt but still sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The Jeep driver was properly restrained but sustained moderate injuries. The Jeep driver was transported to a local hospital.
As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.
