ST. GEORGE —- The first-ever election for a mayor, police chief and council members is set for March 2025 for the newly formed City of St. George.
Until the upcoming election, Governor Jeff Landry appointed an interim mayor and police chief in May 2024 after the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled to incorporate the City of St. George in April. The March election is a special election and the first time St. George voters will elect officials of their choice.
Current Interim Mayor Dustin Yates has officially announced his plans to run for Mayor of St. George. Since his appointment by Governor Landry, Yates led the city’s transitional government.
“I’m running for mayor because I believe in a brighter future for our city and parish—a future where families thrive, businesses grow, and neighbors work together,” said Yates. “St. George is a community that has already shown what we can accomplish when we come together and I want to build on that momentum.”
Yates started his career as a teacher and coach, and was most recently a firefighter with the St. George Fire Dept. for nearly two decades. While there, Yates served as firefighter/operator, lieutenant, and was most recently, the department’s chief administrative officer.
Per requirements, Yates campaign said he resigned from the classified service of the fire department and will continue as an unclassified employee before announcing his candidacy.
“As an advocate for the incorporation of St. George, Yates was involved in the original petition drive in 2013, helping lay the foundation for the city’s future. His leadership experience, along with his dedication to the
community, makes him uniquely positioned to guide St. George into its next chapter,” said Yates campaign.
Yates and his wife Allison are raising their two children, Avery and Bennett, in St. George and are active members of St. George Catholic Church.
The election for Mayor of St. George is scheduled for March 29, 2025. Qualifying for the March election is Jan. 29 – Jan. 31, 2025.
