DUTCHTOWN — A student from Dutchtown Middle School passed away during the school day, the school confirmed in an email sent to parents Wednesday afternoon.
The student, whose name is being withheld, was reportedly an 8th grader. According to multiple sources, the student collapsed and died during agility warmups in PE class. The PE teacher and coach immediately rushed to assist the girl.
A code blue was initiated, and students in the gym were relocated to another area of the school, sources told UWK.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” Dutchtown Middle School principal Douglas Walker said in an email to parents Wednesday evening. “As we come together to support one another, our priority is to offer care and compassion to all who are affected — especially our students, teachers, and staff.”
School officials did not confirm the circumstances surrounding the student’s sudden death.
The gym the student was in is air conditioned, sources say, and the incident is not believed to be heat related.
Grief counselors and additional support will be at the school Thursday, the school said.
