East Feliciana Schools closed Thursday | Nearly 75% of parish in the dark

EAST FELICIANA — Nearly 75% of East Feliciana Parish remains in the dark Wednesday evening after a strong line of storms rolled through the parish around 8:30 a.m.

“The majority of the outages we have in East Feliciana Parish are from the main transmission line being down. That line is out of West Feliciana Parish and that’s what is down feeding electricity all the way to Clinton,” said East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis.

It’s also why East Feliciana Parish schools, except for Slaughter Community Charter School, have announced they will remain closed on Thursday and a decision has not been made about Friday at this time.

The damage in East Feliciana appears to be several downed trees and power lines. Roughly four to five homes had trees come down inside of them, per the sheriff. Slaughter is one of the only towns in the parish that currently has power.

“Clinton has some bad damage. Ethel along Hwy. 19 may be back up tonight when it comes to power. Despite the amount of trees down, we’re lucky that we have no injuries that we know of. We had some traffic accidents during or right after the weather but no severe injuries from those either,” said Sheriff Travis.

Majority of the roadways in East Feliciana Parish have reopened after the storm damage. State roadways are cleared while majority of parish roads have also opened. However, there are still some parish roadways that may be closed.

“There are still some trees wrapped up in power lines that they cannot get to so those roadways remain closed,” said Sheriff Travis.
