BATON ROUGE — An East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy has been fired after he was charged in federal court with failing to prevent or intervene in an attack on an inmate by another deputy.
Christian Morris, had been on administrative leave since September, EBRSO spokeswoman Casey Hicks said, and was fired Wednesday.
A federal bill of information signed Tuesday charges Morris with violating the civil rights of a parish prison inmate, identified only as C.P., who was injured in the attack that happened in January 2023.
Morris is accused of failing to protect the inmate from the attack by other deputies “despite having had the means and opportunity to do so,” the bill of information said. He also “aided and abetted” others in the attack, the bill of information added.
Those actions deprived the inmate of his right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment, court records show.
Hicks said Morris was fired when the sheriff’s office was made aware of the federal charges.
Jail records indicate that Morris has not yet been booked.
