The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting by one of it’s own deputies.
EBRSO confirmed the deputy responded to a shooting around 9:20am on Sunday, May 29, 2022, on N. Shamrock Dr. at the Shamrock Gardens.
Several 911 calls were made about two neighbors arguing and shooting. When the deputy arrived on the scene, one of the neighbors refused to put down his gun and was allegedly still actively shooting.
The deputy ordered both people to put their guns down and get down on the ground. Marvin Paul, 43, complied, but then Daren Harrell, 56, allegedly went for Paul’s gun and pointed it directly at Paul as he lay on the ground.
That’s when the deputy shot Harrell once in the leg saving Paul’s life. Harrell was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Despite being in the hospital, Harrell has been arrested and charged with attempt second degree murder and illegal use of weapons. Paul was also arrested and charged with attempt second degree murder, illegal use of weapons & simple criminal damage to property.
The deputy will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is normal procedure.
This is an ongoing investigation and as more becomes available, it will be released.
