EBRSO property millage renewal on Dec. 10 ballot

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office announced that the parish-wide law enforcement district millage renewal will be on the Dec. 10th ballot.

The millage was established in 1994 and has to be renewed every 10 years. In 2013, the property millage renewal passed with 79 percent of the vote, according to the secretary of state’s office.

The 6.90 property millage generates $34.15 million in revenue, which accounts for nearly 33 percent of the department’s operating budget.

This millage is one of two that have to be renewed every 10 years for EBRSO. The other, which is 3.73 mills, makes up 18 percent of the sheriff’s office budget. It was last renewed in 2020.

The millage revenue covers services the Sheriff’s Office provides such as: 24-hour road, business and residential patrols, school response throughout the parish, community outreach, securing and rehabilitating those in the parish prison and providing courthouse and courtroom security.

Early voting for the election began November 26 and will run through December 3.
