LIVINGSTON — A Denham Springs man arrested for the brutal attack of an 87-year-old elderly man outside his home in 2022 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, 21st Judicial District Attorney Scott Perrilloux announced.

John Francis Bailey, 52, was one of five men arrested for ambushing “Sonny” Hutchinson outside his home on Hwy 441 in Livingston Parish. Four others’ cases have already been resolved. Officials say Bailey was the brains behind the ambush and he was the only one on scene that particular night. Hutchinson was alone at home while the rest of his family attended his ex-wife’s funeral.

“It was a terrible case. Mr. Hutchinson is doing well and ready and willing to testify. He never waivered. Bailey was willing to serve 15-20 years but Mr. Hutchinson refused to accept anything less than 25 years,” said Assistant District Attorney Brett Sommer.

Investigators allege that Bailey assaulted Hutchinson, bound his hands with a zip tie, and compelled him at gunpoint to open a safe within the residence. Bailey stands accused of stealing over $100,000 in cash and silver coins before fleeing in Hutchinson’s vehicle.

Surveillance footage aided investigators in reconstructing a timeline of the suspects’ movements before, during, and after the crime, Perrilloux said. DNA evidence on the zip ties also linked Bailey to the scene.

Bailey has a prior arrest record in Livingston Parish. In 2020, he faced charges for two counts of theft, one related to the alleged theft of a Bobcat Skid Steer and another concerning the purported theft of a truck and trailer.

Additionally, Bailey faced charges from 2019 for possession of schedule II narcotics and operating a vehicle without a license.

Bailey pleaded guilty to armed robbery, aggravated second-degree battery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Judge Erika Sledge sentenced him to 25 years of hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole, or sentence suspension for the brutal attack of the elderly man.

  1. Mr. Sonny was shown respect; earned the hard way! This 87 year old man stood up and asked for want he wanted and, by the Grace of God, he was heard and seen. Judge Erika Sledge saw and heard Mr. Sonny. This is Justice! God Bless Judge Sledge for honoring wishes of an 87yr old innocent man, one who has lived this long, only to be victimized by an inhumane person. I feel so proud, happy, excited and grateful that Mr. Sonny is recovering and “stood his ground “! God Bless You Mr. Sonny.
And I’m soooo glad I voted for Judge Sledge 🙏
