SORRENTO — With Francine approaching, many area rescues and animal shelters are making the plea for emergency, short-term fosters. Fostering an animal during inclement weather gives them a home environment while keeping them safe from potential issues they may encounter in a shelter environment.
Cara’s House-Ascension Parish Animal Shelter is no longer taking in any animals until further notice, and is in need of fosters to help house the 300 animals located on-site.
The majority of the approximately 150 dogs at Cara’s House are housed in covered, outdoor kennels, President Reagan Daniel said. While the cats are housed indoors, Daniel said it’s important to have the animals fostered for the storm so that the staff can stay off the roads once the weather is bad.
“Regardless of the weather, we still have to come and take care of the animals. So the less animals that are here is the less time that our staff has to be here and not at home, safe and sound,” she said.
Fosters can pickup the animals during normal hours this week. Cara’s House is open 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday thru Wednesday for appointments only, which can be made by sending a message, calling or email, and from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. for adoptions the same days.
Fosters must sign a contract when picking up the animal, and Daniel said to expect to foster it until Saturday at least–depending on the effects of the storm. All necessary supplies will be provided to fosters, including food, leashes, kennels, litter and litter boxes, and more.
Other shelters and rescues have put out the call for fosters, as well. Fostering guidelines and timelines for the storm will vary by organization, and interested fosters are asked to contact each location about the animals in need and their specific guidelines for fostering.
