NEW ORLEANS – It was Feb. 9, 2025 around 10:30 p.m. when an East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputy was injured while assisting New Orleans Police direct Super Bowl traffic. The accident happened on Convention Street, when a woman driving a dually truck clipped the deputy with her back tire.
The deputy, identified as Frank Zapata, was rushed to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including broken ribs and a broken ankle. The deputy’s ankle required surgery, but according to information from EBRSO, the surgery went well. However, he will also need knee surgery in the near future.
There is a GoFundMe set up to help with bills while Deputy Zapata is unable to work.
The driver in the incident initially drove off. EBRSO deputies and NOPD officers reviewed nearby surveillance cameras and put out information on the truck. It’s why officials were able to find the woman and truck in the area around 11:30 p.m. that night
It’s unclear at this time what charges the woman is facing.
The New Orleans Police Dept. is leading the investigation into the deputy injured during the Super Bowl.
