BATON ROUGE — A man is facing multiple charges, including aggravated arson and attempted first-degree murder, after he allegedly poured gasoline and set fire to a home with four children inside. The man, identified as Alfred Deon Jarvis Sr., had two active protective orders against him that prohibited him from being at the home.
Just after 12:30 a.m. Aug. 12, Baton Rouge Fire investigators arrived at the home in the 2500 block of Inverrary Drive in reference to a fire. Investigators found that the door of the home was forced open and that gasoline had been poured and lit in separate areas inside the home.
Officials have said four juveniles were in the home at the time of the incident.
According to a release, the juveniles and other witnesses “heard the door being kicked in, smelled gasoline, and saw two areas on fire as they exited the home.” Plus, multiple witnesses told investigators that they heard Jarvis “yelling ‘everyone is going to die’ while setting the fires.”
Investigators also learned that Jarvis was prohibited from coming onto the property and into the home due to two active protective orders filed by the victim. The victim told officials that Jarvis had been there two days before the fire and removed the home’s Ring doorbell camera.
The victim also provided investigators with text messages and a voice recording that revealed Jarvis threatened them, “including statements that he was going to kill them,” the release said.
Jarvis was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and is charged with the following:
- 1 count of Aggravated Arson
- 4 counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder
- 1 count of Home Invasion
- 1 count of Criminal Trespass
- 1 count of Violation of Protective Orders
The State Police Fugitive Task Force, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, and West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office assisted in arresting Jarvis.
The fire caused approximately $1,000 in damages.
This case remains under investigation.
Not the first time
Jarvis has been arrested on multiple occasions for domestic violence incidents and convicted of domestic abuse battery on two occasions, according to court records. His record also shows arrests for weapons possession and illegal carrying.
The police were called out multiple times in 2018 for domestic incidents involving Jarvis, court records show. He was convicted in one instance of domestic abuse battery on Sept. 27, 2018.
In August 2019, Jarvis was arrested for domestic abuse battery. The victim told responding officers that Jarvis had arrived at her job, started arguing with her and attempted to push her into their vehicle.
The victim’s sister arrived to pick her up, and that’s when Jarvis started physically assaulting her, officials reported. According to the arrest warrant, Jarvis “began to strike the victim multiple times towards her face with a open and closed fist.” He also attempted to strangle her while her sister was present.
The victim’s sister was able to get between the two at one point, allowing the victim to get inside the vehicle. However, Jarvis grabbed a crow bar from his vehicle and damaged all the windows to the vehicle, the warrant said.
East Baton Rouge deputies found and arrested Jarvis. His bond was set at $25,000.
On Aug. 15, 2019, Jarvis pled guilty and the judge sentenced him to serve jail time for 10 days, and be given credit for time already served as a result for the charge. In addition, his sentence ran concurrently with any other time serving.
On Nov. 11, 2021, Jarvis pled guilty to domestic abuse battery. He was sentenced to service six months in parish prison and given credit for time served for this charge. Plus, this sentence was to run concurrently with his sentence for another charge: illegal carrying of weapons.
The protective order against Jarvis was also dissolved at that time.
