Father arrested after 5-year-old son found unresponsive died

ALBANY– A Livingston Parish child’s guardians were arrested after the child was found unresponsive and later died, the Albany Police Department said in a news release Wednesday afternoon.

Albany police were called to Bankston’s Mobile Home Park for an unresponsive juvenile on Dec. 28. Five-year-old Leonardo Eslinger was found to be in “poor condition.”

The child’s father Joseph Eslinger and girlfriend Diana Lopez were arrested and charged with one count each of cruelty to a juvenile in Leonardo’s death.

First responders airlifted Leonardo to a hospital, where he later died, Albany police said. The Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) said according to medical records, the child’s injuries, clinical exam and imaging were all consistent with non-accidental trauma leading to terminal brain trauma.

DCFS says there were no prior abuse or neglect investigations into the family.

The child’s guardians were arrested, and each charged with one count of cruelty to a juvenile.

The investigation is ongoing. More details are not available at this time.
