ADDIS — On the morning of March 2nd, a fire broke out at an Addis duplex, leaving multiple people without a place to call home. The fire destroyed all of their belongings, a family member said, and now they’re in need of help.
Haylie Mendoza’s mom, along with her brother and uncle, lived in the upper unit of the duplex. She said her family members weren’t able to save any of their belongings before the fire engulfed the building in dark plumes of smoke that Sunday morning.
She said they “lost everything” and their downstairs neighbors did too. Mendoza did not know the cause of the fire.
Mendoza said her mom, brother and uncle are now homeless, and because she, her fiancé and young child are staying with other family, Mendoza is at a loss to help her mom more.
“Right now, they’re homeless, and they don’t have anything. And the following that I have on Facebook is not reaching enough people; I just I don’t know how else to really help them,” Mendoza said about asking for the UWK community’s help.
While the Red Cross was able to offer some assistance, Mendoza said her family is still in great need, especially after paying the month’s rent just two days before the fire. They have no place to go right now.
The family also has three dogs in their care.
How you can help
The family is asking for clothing and shoes donations to help replace the items that were lost in the blaze. The sizes of the family are as listed:
Jessica – XL shirts, XL bottoms, 8.5 women’s shoes
Bobby – M shirts, M bottoms, 8 men’s shoes
Allen – L shirts, M-L bottoms, 8-9 in men’s shoes.
These donations can be brought to 5067 Myrle Drive in Addis.
In addition, a GoFundMe has been setup to help the family in their time of need. Mendoza said she is grateful for anything anyone is able to donate to assist her mom, brother and uncle.
“Please send prayers… we need all of the prayers we can get,” she said.
