Memorial service scheduled to honor fallen BRFD fire captain

BATON ROUGE — The Baton Rouge Fire Dept. is mourning the loss of one of their own, Captain William “CJ” Sanders.

Captain Sanders passed away on November 05, 2023 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Per Louisiana law, the type of cancer Captain Sanders developed is presumed to have been caused by his work as a firefighter.

The public visitation for Captain Sanders will be held on November 13, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Istroma Baptist Church, located at 10500 Sam Rushing Dr, Baton Rouge, LA. The memorial service in honor of Captain Sanders will commence promptly at 11:00 a.m. at the Istrouma Baptist Church.

Captain Sanders began his career with the Baton Rouge Fire Department on August 08, 1998.

“Captain Sanders was dedicated and committed to the citizens of Baton Rouge, whom he served faithfully throughout his career. He was an active member of IAFF Local 557. Captain Sanders’ legacy will be remembered for generations to come,” said BRFD in a news release.

Captain Sanders was 54 years old at the time of his death. He was born March 9, 1969.
