BATON ROUGE — The Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) is in the giving spirit. This week, SFM Deputies started distributing more than 10,000 smoke alarms to Louisiana fire departments.
SFM says the smoke alarm giveaway is a way to re-energize ‘Operation Save-A-Life,’ a program designed to make sure Louisianans have working smoke alarms that are properly installed.
If you need a smoke alarm, you can contact your local fire department and request a free smoke alarm and installation through Operation Save-A-Life.
According to SFM, this year 83 people have died in 64 house fires across the state. Only two of those homes had working smoke alarms. Last year, 73 people died in residential fires statewide.
