Fire Marshal’s Office: 36-year-old man dead after fire in Jarreau

JARREAU — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating after a fire Sunday afternoon left one person dead in Pointe Coupee Parish. The victim is now identified as a 36-year-old man.

It was around 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 when the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office, Pointe Coupee Parish Fire District 3 and crews from other fire departments responded to a fire on Woodview Lane in Jarreau. The home was fully engulfed in flames once crews arrived.

Once at the scene, the crews began working to extinguish the fire and secure the scene. During their efforts, crews found someone inside the building. UWK has learned that Steven Bridgewater, 36, died at the scene.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation into what caused the fire and the person’s death. These investigations are ongoing, but investigators did say that the home did not have a working smoke alarm.
