Photos: Flash flooding reported in Pointe Coupee Parish

POINTE COUPEE — Pointe Coupee Parish is currently experiencing flash flooding as storms dump several inches of rain on the area.

Reports indicate that the Bordelon subdivision in Lettsworth has witnessed several homes taking on water, with the most severely affected area being along Hwy. 1 near the Lettsworth Bridge.

Photos submitted to UWK depict street flooding and water reaching the front steps of homes. In addition, National Weather Service radar shows that between 7-8 inches of rain has fallen on parts of the parish on Wednesday. Simmesport has also been significantly impacted by flooding rain.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the flooding and severe weather threats for south Louisiana. New models are showing higher trends of rain for Baton Rouge and areas southeast.

“The majority of our area is under a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall today,” NWS said Wednesday morning. “Forecast confidence is high for the likelihood of storms producing flash flooding today. Confidence on where exactly heavy bands setup and stall is in question.”

“Additionally, our area is under a slight risk of severe weather today. The main threats include damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.”


South Louisiana is expected to experience waves of heavy rain, with the precipitation continuing through Friday. Majority of the Baton Rouge area is now forecast to receive 6-8 inches of rain through Friday. 4-6 inches of rain is likely for surrounding areas. Locally higher rain totals are possible.
