BATON ROUGE — A crash involving an 18-wheeler, multiple vehicles and tens of thousands of pounds of baking flour shut down I-10 eastbound around 10am. As of 10:30 a.m., one lane is now open.
The initial crash happened on Interstate 10 near the Essen Lane exit and that triggered multiple other vehicles to crash, up to eight additional vehicles. The big rig was carrying baking flour and the crash caused nearly 50,000 pounds to spill on the interstate.
As of now, no significant injuries have been reported.
It’s unclear when the entire interstate will re-open as the flour must first be cleared off I-10. Traffic is currently backed up to the Mississippi River Bridge on the eastbound lanes of I-10. Interstate 12 is also backed up near the Airline Hwy. exit. Drivers are urged to take alternate routes.
