PORT ALLEN —- Just days before a former Port Allen Mayor was expected to begin trial and a day after an additional charge, officials say Derek Lewis died by suicide.
Lewis ended his life Thursday evening, Aug. 20, officials say.
Sources tell UWK Lewis was facing a charge for sexual battery with a 25-year-old through the Port Allen Police Dept. That arrest warrant was signed this week for Lewis.
Additionally, Lewis was expected to begin trial next week for an Aug. 2025 arrest when he was charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile, third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
West Baton Rouge detectives began investigating Lewis after they received a tip alleging sexual misconduct between Lewis and a juvenile at the workplace. Through their investigation, detectives learned that Lewis allegedly provided alcohol to the juvenile and engaged in indecent behavior.
Lewis was 65-years-old.
An autopsy will confirm the cause and manner of death.
