Four Louisiana parishes were in the Top 10 in the country for the largest percentage of population loss from 2021 to 2022, according to a recent U.S. Census estimate.

Terrebonne, St. John the Baptist, Plaquemines and St. Charles parishes made the list in terms of annual percentage decline from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022.

The county with the largest percentage decline was Lassen County in California at 6 percent. Los Angeles County, California lost more than 90,700 residents, less than one percent of its 9.7 million population.

St. John the Baptist Parish was second behind Lassen County with a 5.1 percent decrease followed by Terrebonne Parish at 3.9 percent. Plaquemines Parish was fourth with 3.3 percent and St. Charles ranked eighth with a 2.7 percent decline.

Hurricane Ida, which hit south Louisiana in August of 2021, hammered all four Louisiana parishes that made the Top 10.

Some local parishes experienced gains during this time. Livingston gained 2,195 residents, Ascension 1,956, and West Baton Rouge 229. Lafayette Parish was one of the largest gainers with 2,944 new residents.

Some of the largest metro parishes lost population. Jefferson lost 8,045 residents, Orleans 7,314, and East Baton Rouge 3,109. Pointe Coupee (172 residents) and Iberville (207) saw slight decreases in population.

Louisiana’s population decreased by 67,500 from 2020 to 2022. Louisiana had the fourth-largest population decrease.

The data was published as part of annual estimates of county populations produced by the U.S. Census Bureau.
