ERWINVILLE — The West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is releasing new details into how an inmate from Webster Parish escaped from a transport van before he was captured nearly 10 hours later.
It was around 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6th when Webster Parish Correctional transportation deputies notified WBRSO that an inmate in their custody escaped near the area of Hwy. 190 and Poydras Bayou in Erwinville. He was identified as 23-year-old Randall Boyett and was being transported to Hunt Correctional Institute.
Detectives learned that during transport, Boyett managed to slip his leg shackles from both feet. As Webster deputies were traveling in the area of U.S. Hwy 190 and Poydras Bayou Drive, Boyett began complaining that he was feeling sick. When deputies pulled to the shoulder of the roadway and opened the vehicle door, Boyett pushed past them and fled on foot, still handcuffed in the front and holding the leg shackles as one piece.
Webster deputies immediately pursued Boyett but lost sight of him. Throughout the day, multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in search efforts.
Around 6:30 p.m. an Erwinville resident called 911 after spotting Boyett inside a home under renovation.
Boyett was found and taken into custody without incident. Investigators determined that while hiding, Boyett was able to cut and separate his handcuffs and leg shackles.
Boyett was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center on the following charges before being transferred to another facility:
• Simple escape
• Misdemeanor theft
• Simple criminal damage to property
• Unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling
