GONZALES — A son. A brother. A twin. A young life gone too soon. A Gonzales family is mourning the loss of six-year-old Raiden Scott, who died earlier this month, and now the community is rallying around them.
Raiden’s mother, Chassity Scott, told UWK her son, who was born with a bilateral cleft, started not acting like himself last week.
“He wasn’t himself, so I brought him to one hospital, and then said he had a crick in his neck,” she said. “So I took him to Children’s Hospital, and the doctor wouldn’t leave us. He was like, ‘Something is not right. I’m going to do some more tests and labs.'”
The doctor also told the Scotts he was going to do a spinal tap.
“That was to get the fluid from his spine and check for other infections,” Chassity said. “It came back that he had meningitis. The meningitis spread from his spine to his brain so quickly, it caused his brain to swell. They couldn’t get the swelling under control.
“He was brain dead. They ran all type of scans to see if he was getting brain activity, but he wasn’t. His heart and everything was still pumping good, but he was brain dead.”
Because his other organs were still working, the Scotts made the decision to donate Raiden’s organs, so he will continue to live on in others.
Raiden’s father, Roger Scott, is a City of Gonzales Streets Department employee, and earlier this week, Gonzales mayor Tim Riley posted about Raiden on Facebook, saying in part:
Raiden was the beloved son of City of Gonzales Streets Department employee Roger Scott and a bright light in the lives of all who knew him. His joyful spirit, infectious smile, and love for basketball left a lasting impression on his teammates, coaches, friends, and family. Raiden proudly played for the Timberwolves in the Gonzales Youth Basketball League, where he brought enthusiasm and heart to the game he loved.
Now, family, friends, and the Gonzales community are coming together to support the Scotts as they navigate an unimaginable loss. A jambalaya fundraiser benefitting the Scott family is happening on Tuesday, June 30 at Gonzales Civic Center at 11:30 a.m. You can buy a lunch plate with jambalaya and white beans for $10, drinks for $2, and sweets for $1. Plates will be served until they run out.
Raffle tickets will also be sold for $5 each. There are multiple prizes, including a 55″ television.
All proceeds will go toward Raiden’s funeral expenses. ?
