GONZALES — Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a drowning that happened near Gonzales on Sunday, Feb. 16th. A family’s eight-year-old daughter and granddaughter Hannah died in the drowning accident. It happened near Rose Road and Hwy. 941 while Hannah was with her grandmother.
“She was a very loved little girl,” a family-friend told UWK.
A GoFundMe created for the family says Hannah was “a mischievous, determined, caring, and gentle little girl that loved Jehovah.” She was non-verbal autistic, according to sources.
Hannah was staying with her grandmother, who lives near her parents, while her parents were out, said the family-friend, who asked not to be named.
During that stay, Hannah took off running toward a nearby pond. Her grandmother began running to follow her.
“She saw Hannah jump in the pond and she jumped in after her,” the family-friend said.
Her grandmother was unable to get to Hannah and her granddaughter did not survive. But she too struggled in the water after jumping in behind her granddaughter. When help arrived at the scene, the grandmother had to be taken to the hospital, officials confirmed.

At this time, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies believe the drowning near Gonzales to be a true accident and are not pursuing criminal charges.
