SLIDELL — A 55-year-old grandmother was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, in the death of her own five-year-old grandchild.
It was around 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11th when Slidell Police responded to the 300 block of Spartan Loop in the Spartan Trace neighborhood in reference to a child hit by a vehicle in a driveway.
Slidell Police officers say their preliminary investigation shows that the child was in the driveway of their home, waiting for the school bus.
“The child was positioned in front of his grandmother’s 2016 GMC Yukon, which was backed into the driveway. The grandmother, who did not know the child outside, proceeded to leave for work and drove forward out of the driveway, at which time, fatally ran over the child,” Slidell Police said in a news release.
Officers then learned Kristen Anders, 55, “exhibited signs of impairment” and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and central nervous system depressants. The grandmother from Slidell was arrested due to the alcohol and depressants.
“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” said Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau. “I was at the scene this morning, as well as several of our officers. This affects everyone. This hits home for all of us and all of the first responders who were at that scene. I spoke with the victim’s mother several times today and there isn’t anything I can say to make this situation any better. All we can do is pray for their peace. Go home. Hug your kids or grandkids a little tighter tonight. Life is precious and we never know when tragedy could strike for any of us.”
