Grandson arrested, accused of killing grandfather in St. Helena Parish home

AMITE CITY — The St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 24-year-old man allegedly killed his grandfather on Tuesday.

Deputies were called to a home on Hwy. 43 in Amite, just north of Montpelier, on November 18, where they found William Thomas Sharp, 78, dead inside the residence.

Investigators quickly identified Shane William Travis, 24, as the suspect. Travis reportedly lived with his grandfather at the home. He was taken into custody and is now charged with first-degree murder.

Detectives are still working to determine what led to the killing.
