BATON ROUGE — The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair is happening now, and the event runs until Sunday, Nov. 2nd. With just a few days left to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of the fair, Fair Chairman Cliff Barton is encouraging the public to make plans to attend.
“Because of the weather last weekend, we lost both Saturday and Sunday. So we’re hoping you come out this weekend and support the fair.”
The fair is located at the Baton Rouge fairgrounds at BREC’s Airline Hwy. Park/Fairgrounds at 16072 Airline Hwy. in Baton Rouge. The hours are 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Monday thru Friday and from Noon – 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The fair is put on every year by an all-volunteer crew, Barton said. Proceeds from admissions are used as scholarships, sponsorships and grants for other charities and programs that benefit children and families, so he encourages everyone to come out to help the greater community.
“You’re supporting the community by coming out to the fair and having a good time,” he added.
There are over 40 rides in the midway, “great food,” and a variety of daily attractions, shows and music.

Special Events:
LEGO Extravaganza: Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. for ages 7-13. Free entry to participate, but pre-registration is recommended due to popularity.
“We have kids that come and build airplanes, rocket ships, three-wheeled cars — whatever they have, they can come up with something,” Cliff Barton, fair chairman, said. “It’s very creative what they can do.”
Another special event taking place is a high school volunteer awards ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 1st, at 2 p.m. For around three decades now, the ceremony has recognized area students who are nominated for their volunteer service.
Students receive a certificate honoring their volunteer efforts and $500 in a ceremony at the fair.
“This year, we have a record number of kids — 51 of them — are being honored,” Barton said. However, because the event was originally planned for last weekend, some of the students have to miss due to homecoming festivities.
