Gun pulled on attendee at mayor’s ‘Summer of Hope’ kick-off

BATON ROUGE —- The third annual Summer of Hope, that’s hosted by EBR Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, kicked off with police responding to a call for multiple fights and shooting.

However, no shots were fired and no one was injured. Instead, a person attending the pool day at Liberty Lagoon was held at gunpoint. Hundreds of people were in attendance for the event.

Baton Rouge Police did question a person but no word if any arrests have been made.

The Summer of Hope event started at 7:30 p.m. and was expected to go till 10:30 p.m., but around 9:15 p.m. on Lobdell Blvd. on Sunday, May 26, 2024, police cut the event short when they had to respond for multiple fights.

The event was the second event this weekend to kick off the mayor’s summer of hope with goals of reducing gun violence.

The mayor’s office did release a statement after the incident clarifying there was not a shooting.

“I express my gratitude to all the well-intentioned youth and community members who joined us for our Liberty Lagoon Block Party event.

The unfortunate behavior of a small group that occurred highlights the critical need for initiatives like Summer of Hope. With over 200 events planned, our aim is to create spaces for violence intervention and promote peace within our community. Thanks to the vigilant supervision of law enforcement at the event, we were able to intervene quickly and effectively.

We are committed to reviewing and enhancing our safety plans for future events to ensure the well-being of all participants. Additionally, we are dedicated to engaging our youth and families at all levels, fostering a stronger, more connected community. This incident will not deter us from our mission to build a safer, more united Baton Rouge.”
