HAMMOND — A 32-year-old Hammond man was hit and killed overnight Sunday by a car that did not stop after the crash, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) said.
According to TPSO, the suspect, 33-year-old Warren Seither, of Hammond, turned himself into officials after TPSO shared information about the hit-and-run. During the arrest, detectives found Seither’s dark purple Toyota Avalon with ‘extreme damage,’ including a busted windshield and half of the front driver’s side bumper and grill missing.
“This is the third time a pedestrian or bicyclist has been hit by a car in our parish since last Friday and, sadly, this one led to a loss of life,” Sheriff Gerald Sticker said in a news release. “We need all motorists to remember to share the road with bicyclists by giving them at least three feet of space when passing.
“At the same time, bicyclists need to remember to follow all traffic signals and signs and always ride as far to the right as possible, in the same direction with traffic. And no matter the type of crash, everyone involved should always stop and report the incident to first responders.”
Shawn Paul Schech, 32, was headed east on Old Covington Highway just after midnight on March 9. Per an earlier news release, detectives believe he was hit by a maroon Toyota Avalon, possibly a 2013-2015 model, that was going in the same direction.
The crash happened near Clear Lake Boulevard.
