HAMMOND — Police officers in Hammond arrested multiple people and are searching for more after shots were fired into a crowd close to midnight on Tuesday.
Hammond Police Department officers were assigned to assist with crowd control downtown on Tuesday, May 5. Around 11:57 p.m., shots rang out into the crowd around North Cate Street, leaving two people involved in the incident injured.
Multiple suspects were identified in the shooting, which was also witnessed by the Hammond PD officers. One officer returned fire, attempting to stop the suspects, according to the police department.
The suspects fled the area in a vehicle leading Hammond officers on a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle crashed, injuring one of the suspects, per Hammond PD. Others in the vehicle were taken into custody, however, the driver of the vehicle is unknown at this time.
Officers seized multiple firearms, including some that had been modified using a “switch” to make them automatic.
The incident is currently under investigation.

Altavian Baldwin (25) of Independence
• Illegal use of a dangerous weapon
• Illegal carrying of a dangerous weapon with a controlled dangerous substance
• Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
• Principal to attempted second degree homicide
• Possession of marijuana
Cordell Jackson (21) of Independence
• Principal to attempted second degree homicide
• Possession of marijuana
• Illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance
Altrevia Byrd (24) of Independence
• Principal to attempted second degree homicide
• Possession of marijuana
• Illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance
“This is yet another example of young individuals who fear no consequence for their actions. This situation had a huge potential for loss of life if it were not for the quick actions of all our officers who were on scene when it occurred,” said Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr.
