HAMMOND —- A Hammond Police Officer is behind bars, accused in two separate domestic violence cases. Corey Bergeron turned himself in to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office on Monday morning.
Bergeron, 28, is charged with one count of battery on a dating partner with strangulation, which is a felony, and another count of battery on a dating partner. His bond has been set at $50,000. Bergeron is the son of Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr.
TPSO says on Sept. 24, a woman reported to deputies that she and Bergeron got into an argument at his home that morning in the Robert area. While investigating this particular incident, TPSO says deputies found evidence in connection to “at least one prior incident involving the same victim.”
It’s why two warrants were issued for his arrest with deputies searching for him. Bergeron turned himself in Monday morning to officials.
TPSO says their investigation is ongoing, including if there are other potential victims.
Chief Bergeron released a statement Monday evening.
As Chief of Police, I want to assure the public that all normal policies, procedures, and protocols have and will be followed regarding the investigation involving Officer Corey Bergeron. Because the Hammond Police Department is not the investigating agency in this matter, we will respect the investigative process and allow the appropriate agency to conduct its investigation.
As a father, I will say that I have personally watched multiple videos and read many text messages involving my son, Corey, and I believe those videos and messages raise serious questions about the truth of the allegations made against my son. Also, it is extremely difficult to watch your child go through a situation such as this.
At the same time, I recognize that this matter must be handled through the proper investigative and legal processes. I believe the facts will ultimately come to light and Corey will be exonerated of all charges. Our family will continue to support Corey as we work through this difficult situation and we look forward to a final resolution.
