HAMMOND — Several people have been arrested for gang-related activity after a fatal shooting that happened last week, according to Hammond Police Department. Despite medical efforts, the victim, now identified as 20-year-old Antonio Brister of Hammond, died of his injuries shortly after arriving at a local hospital.
Police arrested six individuals and have a warrant for one more person in connection to the shooting.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, Hammond PD learned that Antonio Brister arrived at the North Oaks Medical Center suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries. Officers backtracked the crime scene to the area of Apple and King Ard streets in Hammond.
Detectives identified and interviewed several persons of interest and learned that a group was gathered at a home on an adjacent street while the victim and several others were playing “op” music and dancing on the corner of King Ard and Apple Street.
According to officials, the people in the home “felt disrespected by this” and entered the woods near an abandoned house on Apple Street. That’s where they allegedly started shooting in the direction of Brister and his friends, about 51 yards away.
A single round hit Brister, which led up to his death, per Hammond PD. No other injuries or damage to property were reported.

Darius Matthews (17) of Hammond:
- Obstruction of justice
- Failure to report certain felonies
- Second degree murder
- Illegal discharge of a dangerous weapon
- Criminal Street Gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity
Zakarey Smith (18) of Hammond:
- Obstruction of justice
- Failure to report certain felonies
- Second degree murder
- Illegal discharge of a dangerous weapon
- Criminal Street Gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity
Davonte Malik Hayes, (22) of Hammond:
- Obstruction of justice
- Failure to report certain felonies
- Second degree murder
- Illegal discharge of a dangerous weapon
- Criminal Street Gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity
Darius Ray Brown, (18) of Hammond:
- Failure to report certain felonies
- Criminal Street Gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity
- Principal to second degree murder
Ja’Ray Mitchell, (21) of Hammond:
- Failure to report certain felonies
- Criminal Street Gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity
As a result of this investigation, a warrant has been issued for 17-year-old Tykeem Washington (of Hammond), but he has not been arrested at this time. He faces the following charges: failure to report certain felonies and criminal street gangs and patterns of criminal gang activity.
