ROSEDALE — A family is remembering a mother and her son after a tragic crash on Feb. 10. The two were known as being “best friends,” according to family.
Abbey Jones and her five-year-old son Eli were both in the vehicle when it ran off the road, striking a tree near a bayou. Mother and son were transported to a hospital, but neither survived their injuries, according to the Iberville Sheriff’s Office.
According to Jacob Parker, Abbey Jones’ brother-in-law and godfather and uncle to Eli, Abbey had picked Eli up from school earlier in the day because he was sick.
“He wanted popsicles, so she was taking him to go get some popsicles,” Parker told UWK.
Right now, officials are still trying to piece together what caused the fatal crash.
Remembering Abbey and Eli
“You hear people say, they were the light of the room when they walk in, but she made it a point to be. She was loud. She was unfiltered. She just loved as hard as she could,” Parker said of his sister-in-law. “Above all, she was the most devoted mom, just her and Eli spent so much of their time together.”
Abbey Jones was married to her husband Burl, with sons Lane and Eli, along with “bonus” children Karson and Grayson.
Mom and son were tight-knit, with Parker calling them “best friends,” who spent the majority of their time together. He added that Eli was “absolutely the embodiment of his mother in a little bitty form.”
In their obituary, the family wrote, “Eli inherited his mother’s playful spirit, her gift for laughter, and her ability to love without limit. They leave behind a legacy of silly songs, shared adventures, and a reminder that life is best lived with a bit of glitter and a lot of heart.”
Parker added, “Eli was the most little mischievous, ‘little boy’s little boy.’ He’s always dirty. Never wanted to have a shirt on. Always up for an adventure, wanting to play in the dirt, following his daddy and his brothers around, just always looking to get into something.”
Abbey and Eli will be cremated, the family shared, and a Celebration of Life service will happen on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Fellowship Church in Zachary. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with the memorial service to follow immediately after.
