Historical marker stolen in Pointe Coupee Parish

The Pointe Coupee Historical Society needs help locating a missing memorial marker for Ernest Gaines.

Earlier this year, the Pointe Coupee Historical Society dedicated a memorial marker to Ernest Gaines at the Miss Jane Pittman Oak on Highway 416 between Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Wye Road in Lakeland.

The Pointe Coupee Parish Government is offering a $500 reward for information about the stolen historical sign.

Anyone with information leading to the return or arrest of those responsible for the theft of the Ernest Gaines marker is eligible for the reward.

Gaines’ book “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” brought him international acclaim. The book was a fictional narrative about a 110-year-old woman born into slavery.
